About MHTS

Creation of the Tribunal marks a fundamental change in the way decisions will be made.

The Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland was created on 5th October 2005 as a result of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003. Our headquarters are located in Hamilton and we also have staff who work throughout Scotland.

The Tribunal is sponsored by the Scottish Government Health Directorates and is made up of two distinct areas within a single organisation.

The first area is the Administration and our Chief Executive is Mrs Patricia Lewis. This area is staffed with Scottish Government civil servants mainly based at central headquarters in Hamilton.

The second area is the Tribunal which is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) and is headed by a President.
